Electric motors and electronic devices generate electromagnetic fields that sometimes have to be shielded in order not to affect neighboring electronic components or the transmission of signals. High-frequency electromagnetic fields can only be shielded with conductive shells that are closed on all sides. Often thin metal sheets or metallized foils are used for this purpose. However, for many applications such a shield is too heavy or too poorly adaptable to the given geometry. The ideal solution would be a light, flexible and durable material with extremely high shielding effectiveness.

Buckyballs represent a new and fascinating molecular allotropic form ofcarbon that has received a lot of attention by the chemical community during thelast two decades. This unabbated interest on this singular family of highlystrained carbon spheres has allowed establishing the fundamental chemicalreactivity of these carbon cages and, therefore, a huge variety of fullerenederivatives involving[60] and[70]fullerenes, higher fullerenes and endohedralfullerenes have been prepared. Much less is known, however, on the chemistry ofthe uncommon non-IPR fullerenes which currently represent a scientific curiosityand which could pave the way to a new universe of new fullerenes. In this reviewon buckyballs we have mainly focused on the most recent and novelty covalentchemistry of fullerenes involving metal catalysis and asymmetric synthesis, aswell as on some of the most significant advances in supramolecular chemistry,namely H-bonded fullerene assemblies and the search for efficient concavereceptors for the convex surface of fullerenes. Furthermore, we have alsodescribed the recent advances of the macromolecular chemistry of fullerenes, thatis, those polymer molecules endowed with fullerenes which have been classifiedaccording to their chemical structures. The content of this review is completedwith the study of endohedral fullerenes, a new family of fullerenes in which thecarbon cage of the fullerene contain a metal, molecule or metal complex in theinner cavity. The presence of these species affords new fullerenes with completedifferent properties and chemical reactivity, thus opening a new avenue in which amore precise control on the photophysical and redox properties of fullerenes is possible. The use of fullerenes for organic electronics, namely in photovoltaicapplications and molecular wires, complement the study and highlight the interestof these carbon allotropes for realistic practical applications. We have pointed outthe so-called non-IPR fullerenes – those that do not follow the isolated pentagonrule
 – 
 as the most intriguing class of fullerenes which, up to now, have onlyshown the tip of the huge iceberg behind the former examples reported in theliterature. The number of possible non-IPR carbon cages is almost infinite and thenext future will show us wether they will become a reality
